5-Methyl-3-oxo-hexanoic acid ethyl ester is a synthetic, pyridazine derivative that blocks the chloride channels in the muscle membrane. It is used to treat cardiovascular diseases and virus infections. 5-Methyl-3-oxo-hexanoic acid ethyl ester has been shown to inhibit the hydroxylation of cholesterol by blocking the cholesterol side chain cleavage enzyme (hydroxylase) and also to be reactive with anilines, which are used to manufacture medicines. This drug was originally developed as a potential treatment for weevils but was found to be too toxic for this purpose. The azide moiety in 5-methyl-3-oxo-hexanoic acid ethyl ester can be replaced with other functional groups without affecting its activity, which may make it more useful as a therapeutic agent.
