Methyl phenyl sulfone is a derivative of diphenyl sulfoxide. It has a nucleophilic behavior and reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form phenylsulfonyl fluoride, which can then react with p-hydroxybenzoic acid to form methyl phenyl sulfone. Methyl phenyl sulfone has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNFα and IL6 in human hepg2 cells. Methyl phenyl sulfone also inhibits cationic polymerization by competing with divalent metal ions for binding sites on the anionic polymers that are required for this type of reaction. This reduces inflammation by preventing immune cells from adhering to the endothelium in inflamed tissues.
