Description

6-Methylchromone is a flavone derivative that has been shown to act as an electrophilic reagent. It reacts with alkenes and alkynes to form chromones, which are reactive intermediates that can be used in the synthesis of other compounds. The reaction of 6-methylchromone with benzaldehyde is an example of this type of reaction. The mechanism for the formation of chromones is thought to involve nucleophilic attack by the methyl group on the carbonyl carbon atom followed by an elimination reaction. 6-Methylchromone crystallizes in the monoclinic system and has a fingerprint pattern consisting of two spots at 17 and 18 degrees 2θ, corresponding to the molecular formula C9H8O2.

This compound may also be obtained from extracts of "Laurus nobilis" (sandalwood) wood oil.
