Methyl (S)-(-)-3-bromoisobutyrate is a chiral synthon that is used as an intermediate in organic synthesis. The most common use of this compound is in the preparation of butyric acid, which is used in the production of polyesters and polyurethanes. This substance can be prepared by reacting methyl bromide with 3-butene-1,4-diol. Methyl (S)-(-)-3-bromoisobutyrate is also an esterase inhibitor and has been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa at low concentrations. It has been found to be selective for mutants resistant to other antibiotics such as erythromycin or penicillin. Methyl (S)-(-)-3-bromoisobutyrate was one of the first molecules found to have enantioselective inhibition activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and
