N-Methylformanilide is a chemical compound with the molecular formula CHClNO. It is a colorless liquid with a strong, unpleasant odor. It can be prepared by nitration of formamide with nitric acid and hydrochloric acid. The inhibitory effect of N-methylformanilide on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been studied in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, N-methylformanilide inhibited HIV infection by blocking reverse transcriptase activity and the formation of viral DNA. In vivo, it decreased the production of HIV in blood cells from infected patients. In addition, it was found to be more potent than other anti-HIV drugs such as zidovudine or stavudine against H9 cells that were infected with monkey SIV.
