• Description: Methyl 2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzoate is a carbonyl compound that has the chemical formula CH3OOC(OH)CH2COOH. It has fluorescence properties and can be used to make other compounds by intramolecular hydrogen transfer, photophysical, and preparative methods. Methyl 2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzoate is used in the production of salicylic acid and its derivatives. This compound is also used as a precursor for other organic compounds. Methyl 2-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzoate can be prepared by the reaction of methanol with methyl chloroacetate in diethyl ether or oxygen gas. The yields are about 80%.
