Trans-4-Methylcyclohexylamine (TMC) is a cyclic amine that is structurally related to spermidine. It can be found in the body as a metabolic product of the amino acid ornithine, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. TMC has been shown to inhibit bowel disease by binding to and inhibiting the activity of enzymes involved in the inflammatory response. TMC also binds with high affinity to a number of other amines, such as dopamine, serotonin and histamine. The binding affinity of TMC for these amines is greater than its affinity for cyclohexane rings, which may explain why it has not been detected in vivo.
