4-Methylpyridinium chloride is a coordination compound that is made up of one 4-methylpyridine molecule and one chloride ion. It forms a supramolecular cavity with the aluminium atom, which can be used to form complexes with ligands. This coordination compound has been synthesised from the reaction of 4-methylpyridine and aluminium chloride in solvents such as ethanol. The formation of this coordination compound is enhanced by the presence of ligands, which are required for its stability. Coordination compounds have been shown to complementarity when they are combined with other molecules that have a similar structure.
