5-Methylfuran-2-boronic acid, pinacol ester is an anion with a heteroaromatic structure. Its affinity for electron-deficient centers in organic molecules has been used as the basis for its use in organic synthesis and catalysis. The compound can be synthesized by reacting 5-methylfuran-2-boronic acid with pinacol under basic conditions. Modifications to the pinacol molecule have led to increased stability and better solubility properties. The stability of the 5-methylfuran-2-boronic acid, pinacol ester anion has been studied using experimental methods such as infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which showed that it undergoes reactions with silicon surfaces and devices at energies of about 0.3 eV. Theory predicts that the compound is stabilized by electron delocalization over three boron atoms, which can be explained by a functional theory approach.
