2-Methylnaphth[1,2-d]oxazole (MNO) is a reactive, thermodynamic, and fluorescent molecule that has been used in the study of phenyl groups. The fluorescence of MNO can be quenched by methoxyphenyl groups. MNO can be synthesized by reacting an isopropyl group with nitrobenzene, followed by the addition of ammonia. The reactivity of this molecule can be studied using thioacetamide. The enthalpic parameters for this reaction are -43.8 kJ/mol and -36.5 kJ/mol for the forward and reverse reactions respectively. This compound is also soluble in water and nonpolar solvents such as hexane or pentane.
