4-Methoxyazepane is a potent compound that inhibits the sulfonamides, which are compounds that inhibit dehydrogenases. The discovery of this chemical was made by accident when it was found to be a potent inhibitor of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD), an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of cortisone to cortisol. 4-Methoxyazepane has been shown to act as an inhibitor for other dehydrogenases, such as azepane and sulfonamide type dehydrogenases.
