Description

Methyl 3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzoate is a mesomorphic solid that is soluble in trifluoroacetic acid and chloroform. It has a melting point of -8°C, a boiling point of 191°C, and a density of 1.08 g/cm3. Methyl 3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzoate absorbs light at wavelengths from 260 nm to 330 nm with maximum absorption at 290 nm. The compound exhibits fluorescence with an emission maximum at 360 nm when excited by ultraviolet light. Methyl 3-formyl-4-hydroxybenzoate is used as a ligand for metal ions, such as copper and nickel, for use in structural analysis and as a photostabilizer for polymers or dyes.
