Mercury nitrate is an antimicrobial agent that is used in wastewater treatment. It inhibits the growth of bacteria by reacting with the hydroxyl group on the bacterial cell wall and inhibiting enzymes. Mercury nitrate also reacts with epidermal growth factor, which causes increased cell proliferation and skin cancer in mice. The chemical stability of mercury nitrate allows it to be used for long periods without losing potency or being broken down by other chemicals.
Mercury nitrate can be detected using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, as well as a variety of other analytical techniques. Nitrates are genotoxic agents, but mercury nitrate has not been shown to be genotoxic in vitro or in vivo.
