Description

Alpha-monofluoromethyldopa (α-MFD) is an irreversible enzyme inhibitor that inhibits dopamine β-hydroxylase, a key enzyme in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter dopamine. It is used to treat Parkinson's disease and other conditions in which there is a deficiency or absence of dopamine. α-MFD is administered by injection and has been shown to have no effect on diabetics when given at sublethal doses. It has been used for the treatment of depression, panic disorder, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric disorders. It also has diagnostic uses in detecting monoamine neurotransmitters and pharmacological treatments for menopausal symptoms. α-MFD is synthesized through an amine pathway from methylamine, formaldehyde, and ammonia. This drug has no significant effects on women as compared to men when given at therapeutic doses.
