alpha-Monofluoromethylputrescine is a catalysed, ring-opening reaction of an alkene to form a dicarboxylic acid. It is an inhibitor of glutamate dehydrogenase, which is involved in the production of energy in the body. This compound also inhibits the synthesis of ornithine and arginine, which are amino acids that are important for protein production and growth. alpha-Monofluoromethylputrescine is synthesized by a synthetase enzyme that uses two molecules of glutamic acid as substrates. The enzyme catalytic asymmetric reaction forms one molecule of alpha-monofluoromethylputrescine and one molecule of glutamate. This reaction can be catalysed by hypervalent reagents such as PF(3)H(2).
