Methyl 2-(trifluoromethyl)benzoate is the methyl ester of trifluoromethylbenzoic acid, an aromatic compound. It is a colorless liquid that has a characteristic odor and is soluble in organic solvents. Methyl 2-(trifluoromethyl)benzoate can be synthesized by reacting phenyl groups with fluorine in the presence of chlorine. The molecule is planar with a dipole moment and has two conformations due to rotation about the C-C bond. The molecule exhibits aromaticity because it contains a ring of alternating single and double bonds, which are delocalized throughout the entire ring. The oxygenases group can cleave methyl 2-(trifluoromethyl)benzoate at one or more positions on the benzene ring to form products such as benzoates, which can then undergo biotransformations that lead to aromatization.
