(2E)-3-(1-Naphthyl)acrylic acid is a low molecular weight carbonyl compound with significant inhibitory activity against the synthesis of proteins and DNA. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis and DNA replication in bacteria, which may be due to its ability to form covalent bonds with nucleophilic groups such as hydroxyl and amine groups. This compound is synthesized from acrylic acid by substitution of the carboxylic acid group with a tetrazole group, which is bioisosteric with the carboxylic acid group. The molecular weight of (2E)-3-(1-naphthyl)acrylic acid is 193.2 daltons, making it a low molecular weight compound. This compound has been shown to have substitutions at positions C-4, C-5, C-6, and C-7.
