3-Nitro-4-propoxybenzoic acid is a synthetic, water soluble chemical that has been used as an intermediate in the synthesis of proparacaine. 3-Nitro-4-propoxybenzoic acid can be identified by its UV spectrum, which has maxima at 225 nm and 259 nm. The purity of 3-nitro-4 propoxybenzoic acid can be determined by analyzing the reaction solution for impurities. 3NPA is typically synthesized from nitroparacen with sodium hydroxide and hydrochloric acid.
