1,8-Naphthalenedicarboxylic acid is a hydroxide solution that is used in the synthesis of dyes and pigments. It also has been shown to be effective against pancreatic cancer cells. 1,8-Naphthalenedicarboxylic acid reacts with metal surfaces in the presence of hydrochloric acid to form a mixture of products that includes aromatic hydrocarbons and divalent hydrocarbons. This reaction can be catalyzed by an acid catalyst such as aluminium or zinc. 1,8-Naphthalenedicarboxylic acid can also react with carbonyl groups to form a hydrated derivative. This reaction is facilitated by the presence of hydrated metal ions such as magnesium or calcium.
