4-Nitroanisole is a nitro compound that can be found in the environment at low levels. It can react with amines to form carcinogenic nitrosamines, and has been shown to cause DNA strand breaks. 4-Nitroanisole is a redox agent, capable of reducing oxygen and oxidizing nitrite ions. It also reacts with water vapor to produce nitrous acid, which contributes to acid rain. This compound is used as an oxidation catalyst in wastewater treatment and as a reductant in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reactions.
