- N-Acetyl-L-cysteine
N-Acetyl-L-cysteine is a potent antioxidant that can protect cells from oxidative damage and prevent the development of diabetes. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as a treatment for cardiovascular diseases. N-Acetyl-L-cysteine is an amino acid which may act as a prodrug to acetylcysteine, the active form. This drug has been shown to have antioxidative properties in both model systems and cell culture, which may be due to its ability to inhibit toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) activity in macrophages. The drug has also been shown to reduce cardiac injury by protecting against hypoglycemic effects and oxidative injury in fetal bovine tissue.
