Carbon tetrachloride and chlorobenzene are shown to be the most reactive halides with nitroacetanilide. Carbon tetrachloride reacts with N-nitrosoacetanilide to form a radical chain reaction which leads to the formation of chlorobenzene, peroxide, and thiourea. The latter then hydrolyzes to form thioacetic acid and styrene. Nitroacetanilide can also react with acetone in a similar way, forming N-nitrosopropionaldehyde.
