• Description: (S)-Naproxen methyl ester is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat pain and inflammation. It inhibits the production of prostaglandins by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) activity, which converts arachidonic acid into prostaglandins. The enzyme COX is responsible for the formation of various inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Naproxen has no effect on platelet aggregation or blood coagulation time, and has low potential for serious side effects. Naproxen was synthesized in an enantioselective fashion by employing kinetic resolution strategies with asymmetric synthesis. This strategy allowed the preparation of a single enantiomer of naproxen, which may have different pharmacological properties than its racemic counterpart.
