Nebivolol is an orally active beta-blocker that has been shown to increase natriuretic peptide levels at optimum concentrations in vivo. It binds to the beta-2 adrenergic receptor, inhibiting the release of catecholamines which cause vasoconstriction and increased myocardial oxygen demand. Nebivolol has been shown to be effective in reducing congestive heart failure symptoms and in preventing ventricular arrhythmias. Nebivolol can also reduce oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes. In addition, it inhibits cardiac hypertrophy and protects against myocardial infarction by inhibiting the influx of calcium ions into the cytosolic compartment. The drug also inhibits cyclase activity, which is responsible for converting ATP into cyclic AMP (cAMP).
