o-Nicotine is a nicotinic alkaloid found in tobacco. It is a cholinergic agonist that binds to the acetylcholine receptors, stimulating the production of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine has been shown to have an effect on cancer cells and may be used as a therapeutic agent for colorectal cancer. o-Nicotine also stimulates serotonin and dopamine release in the brain, which are neurotransmitters that regulate mood and behaviour. It has been shown to inhibit the release of these neurotransmitters in animal models, suggesting a possible use in the treatment of depression. o-Nicotine binds to biogenic amines such as dopamine, serotonin, and histamine, which are involved in many physiological processes including mood regulation and pain sensation.
