3-Nitrocarbazole is a synthetic carbazole that has been reported to be mutagenic. It has low activity in its singlet state, but when irradiated with light, it becomes reactive and can cause DNA damage. This compound is synthesized by the condensation of nitrobenzaldehyde and acetonitrile in the presence of a base. The synthesis of 3-nitrocarbazole was first described by using the photochemical reaction between nitrobenzaldehyde, acetonitrile, and iodine in chloroform or dichloromethane. The nitro group is introduced by iodination of the carbonyl group at position 3 on the aromatic ring with sodium iodide in acetic acid.
