The reaction mechanism for 2-nitroacetic acid involves the formation of methylene active methylene with particle, which then reacts with water to form nitrous acid. This process results in the release of nitrogen oxides and hydrogen chloride gas. 2-Nitroacetic acid also has an anti-inflammatory effect on several types of inflammatory diseases by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis.
