3-(Naphthalen-2-yl)benzoic acid is a synthetic antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including coliforms. The compound has been shown to act by interfering with the synthesis of fatty acids in the cell membrane. 3-(Naphthalen-2-yl)benzoic acid can be used as a subclinical mastitis treatment for cows. This compound is found to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi that cause infectious diseases in humans. 3-(Naphthalen-2-yl)benzoic acid also shows activity against Gram positive bacteria and is effective at low concentrations. The mechanism of action is not yet known but may involve interference with DNA polymerase or RNA polymerase.
