• Description: D-Norleucine is a non-protein amino acid that is an important part of the synthesis of proteins. It has been shown to be a competitive inhibitor of the racemase enzyme, which converts D-alanine to L-alanine. The target cell for this reaction is unknown, but it may be related to the protein synthesis process. D-Norleucine has also been shown to inhibit the growth of Mycobacterium avium and other acid-fast bacteria by interfering with the production of ATP and incorporation into cellular structures. This inhibition is caused by its ability to form ionic bonds with functional groups in these compounds.
