4-Nitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical compound with the molecular formula CHNO. It is a colorless solid that is soluble in water. 4-Nitrophenylhydrazine is used as an analytical reagent and in organic synthesis. The compound has a pK of 1.3 and its pH range is between 2 and 3. 4-Nitrophenylhydrazine can be synthesized by reacting phenylamine with nitric acid, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting monosodium salt with hydrochloric acid. This reaction requires heating to about 300°C and produces large amounts of hydrogen fluoride gas, which must be captured to prevent it from becoming an environmental hazard.
