2-Nitrobiphenyl is a diazonium salt that is used as a reagent to prepare 2-nitrobenzenes. It reacts with sodium carbonate in the presence of oxygen to produce a dark blue solution. A nitro group is introduced by adding trifluoroacetic acid and biphenyl, which are then hydrogenated with anhydrous sodium in the presence of hydrogen gas. The reaction product is nitrocinnamic acid. Nitrocinnamic acid can be synthesized by coupling phenylmagnesium bromide with nitrobenzene. This process involves two steps: Suzuki coupling and reduction.
