- 1,1,3,3-Tetramethylbutyl isocyanate~2,4,4-Trimethyl-2-pentyl isocyanate
tert-Octyl isocyanide is an organic compound that is a colorless liquid at room temperature. It has a pleasant odor and a low vapor pressure. tert-Octyl isocyanide has been found in nature as an amine of unknown origin. It has been shown to react with alcohols and acid chlorides to form serendipitous products, such as cyclic ethers, which are not known to exist in other amine-reaction systems. The stereoselective reaction of tert-octyl isocyanide with nitrobenzene yields fluorescent derivatives of quinoxalines. This reaction also produces the cyclic product phthalhydrazide, which has been used for the synthesis of fluorescing molecules.
