Osmium tetroxide, OsO4, is a chemical compound used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is a strong oxidizing agent and can be used to cleave carbon-carbon bonds, for example, in the ring-opening reaction of epoxides. Osmium tetroxide also reacts with sodium chloride to form sodium osmate and sodium chloride. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy has revealed that OsO4 binds to skin cells and it might help to preserve the spatial arrangement of membrane structures in nerve fibres. In plants, osmium tetroxide has been shown to bind intracellularly to arabidopsis thaliana cells and allosteric modulators have been found that can change its binding affinity.
