3-Oxo-cyclopentanecarboxylic acid methyl ester is a cyclopentane ring that is used in the synthesis of prostaglandin. The synthesis of this compound involves the addition of methyl iodide to cyclobutanone, which leads to the formation of an alkyl chloride. This alkyl chloride can be reacted with a cyclopentanecarboxylic acid to produce 3-oxo-cyclopentanecarboxylic acid methyl ester. The regioselectivity of this reaction is determined by the steric and electronic effects on the carbon atom adjacent to the carbonyl group. 3-Oxo-cyclopentanecarboxylic acid methyl ester undergoes photoirradiation under ultraviolet light, leading to the formation of prostaglandins.
