(R)-Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits the DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. It binds to bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA and inhibits protein synthesis, leading to cell death by inhibiting the production of proteins vital for cell division. (R)-Ofloxacin has been shown to be effective against Staphylococci and Corynebacteria. (R)-Ofloxacin has been shown to cause drug reactions in humans, including coryneform reactions, which may be due to its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. The drug is used as an antibacterial agent in human patients at a dose range of 100-400 mg/day orally in divided doses for 7-14 days. It is also used at 400 mg/day orally for 3 days followed by 200 mg/day orally for 10 days as prophylaxis against infection
