D-2-Oxo-3-(2-mercaptoethyl)-5-phenylimidazolidine (DLOMI) is a potent inhibitor of the PCSK9 protein that has been shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels. DLOMI binds to PCSK9, preventing it from binding to LDL receptors on hepatocytes. DLOMI is metabolized by the liver and excreted in urine as 2-mercaptoethanol and D-2-oxoimidazolidine. The mechanism of action for lowering LDL cholesterol levels may be due to inhibition of lipid synthesis or increased clearance of LDL particles from the blood. DLOMI has been shown to have no effect on HIV infection, but does inhibit lymphocyte transformation in vitro and can be used for treating cancer in vivo.
