Description

6-Oxo-1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-pyridazine-3-carboxylic acid (OPC) is a scrubber that is used to remove volatile organic compounds from the air. It reacts with monomethylhydrazine (MMH) in the presence of an oxidizing agent to form a stable and relatively nonvolatile compound. OPC has been found to be biodegradable and can be used for wastewater treatment. The synthesis of OPC relies on the reaction of pyridazine with chloral hydrate and phosgene in the presence of a base. This reaction yields OPC as a white crystalline solid. In toxicity studies, it was found that this compound does not have any adverse effects on humans or animals at high concentrations.
