1-Octyl-2-Methylindole is a phase transfer catalyst that can be used to catalyze the synthesis of phthalic anhydride from methanol and potassium carbonate. This catalyst is most active at low temperatures, but can also be used at room temperature. The activity of this compound has been shown by analyses of the reaction products obtained in the presence and absence of the catalyst. Phase transfer catalysis is a chemical process in which reactants are separated into two phases, usually by using a solvent or liquid medium to dissolve one reactant and suspend another reactant. It relies on the transfer of one reactant across a boundary between two immiscible phases, with its concentration being maintained through mass action.
