N-octyl-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) is a solid catalyst and fluorescence probe that can be used in the synthesis of fatty acids. OTAB is soluble in organic solvents and has a high thermal expansion coefficient. Reaction of sodium carbonate with OTAB produces hydrogen tartrate, which can be used as a pharmacological agent for HIV infection. OTAB also has surfactant properties and can be used as a detergent composition for kinetic data.
OTAB is able to form hydrogen bonds with hydrophobic molecules and this property makes it useful in detergents. The hydrophobic effect allows OTAB to form micelles when mixed with water, which provides an oil-in-water emulsion that can be used as a reaction solution.
