4-Octadecyloxybenzaldehyde is a colorless to yellowish liquid with an unpleasant odor. It is soluble in organic solvents and exhibits greater than average volatility. This chemical is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. 4-Octadecyloxybenzaldehyde can be made by reacting benzaldehyde with octadecylsulfate or octadecanediols. The reaction requires a base and has an activation energy of 15.8 kcal/mol. This compound absorbs ultraviolet light, which leads to the formation of radicals that can cause irreversible oxidation in biological systems. 4-Octadecyloxybenzaldehyde has been shown to have mesomorphic properties and is capable of transporting molecules across membranes.
