Description

3-Pyridylacetic acid HCl is a colorless, odorless compound that is soluble in water. It can be used as an analytical reagent to detect picolinic acid in urine samples. 3-Pyridylacetic acid HCl reacts with picolinic acid to form a red compound. The reaction can be monitored by measuring the absorbance of the solution at 520 nm. This compound is also used as a substrate for piperazine, which will react with it to form 3-acetylpyridine, which can then be identified by its characteristic green color and sweet odor. 3-Pyridylacetic acid HCl is also used to prepare carboxylic acids from amines. To do this, it reacts with hydroxide solution or sodium hydroxide solution to form carboxylic acids and ammonia gas (NH3).
