Description

Podophyllin resin is a cytotoxic agent that belongs to the group of natural products. It is obtained from the rhizome and roots of Podophyllum emodii, which are perennial plants native to North America. The active ingredient in Podophyllin resin is podophyllotoxin, which inhibits cell division by blocking DNA synthesis and RNA synthesis. Podophyllotoxin binds to the enzyme topoisomerase II, causing breakage of DNA strands and preventing the enzymes from re-ligating them. This prevents cells from dividing and leads to their death. Podophyllin resin has been used as a treatment for warts (e.g., condylomata acuminata) since ancient times, although it may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals.
