2,3,4,5,6-Pentamethylbenzyl chloride is an inorganic acid that is used for the preparation of monochlorides. It is a byproduct of chlorination and many other organic reactions. It can be recycled from carbon tetrachloride by reaction with sodium iodide to form 2,3,4,5-tetramethylbenzyl chloride and chlorine gas. 2,3,4,5-Pentamethylbenzyl chloride has been shown to induce cancer in animals and is toxic to aquatic life. The toxicity of this chemical depends on the concentration and duration of exposure. The effects on aquatic life are due to its high solubility in water and ability to react with dissolved oxygen to form toxic compounds such as hydrochloric acid or hypochlorous acid. This chemical undergoes oxidation when exposed to air or light and is also toxic if inhaled or ingested.
