Potassium 2,2,2-trifluoroacetate (PTFAA) is a chemical compound that participates in a variety of reactions. It is used in the preparation of fatty acids and alcohols for analytical chemistry and as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals. PTFAA also has been shown to be effective at removing calcium stearate from samples. The reaction mechanism for PTFA is believed to involve nucleophilic attack by the trifluoroacetic acid on the carbonyl group of the ester substrate, followed by protonation to form the product and release of hydrogen fluoride. This reaction can be catalyzed by palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions with alkylthio groups.
