Pyrimidine-2,4,6-triol is a pentacyclic triterpene that has been shown to have anticancer properties and may be an effective treatment for cancer. Studies have shown that pyrimidine-2,4,6-triol inhibits the growth of tumor cells by inhibiting the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. Pyrimidine-2,4,6-triol also increases dopamine levels in the brain and has antiinflammatory activity. Pyrimidine-2,4,6-triol is one of two tautomers of malonic acid; it can exist as either a keto or enol form. The keto form is more stable than the enol form because of its increased resonance stabilization energy.
