1-(Phenylsulfonyl)pyrrole is an analog of nicotinic acetylcholine. It is a potent inhibitor of the enzyme choline acetyltransferase and has been shown to be effective against inflammatory diseases. 1-(Phenylsulfonyl)pyrrole binds to the active site of choline acetyltransferase, blocking its activity and inhibiting synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This substance also exhibits anti-cancer properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit DNA replication and induce apoptosis in cancer cells. The synthetic pathway for this compound has not yet been determined but is thought to involve a nucleophilic reaction with mercuric chloride.
