Potassium hexachlororhodate(III) is a strong oxidizing agent that has been used as an electrocatalyst in the production of organic solvents. The reaction occurs in two steps, where the first step is the oxidation of chloride ions to chlorine gas and the second step is the reduction of rhodium ions to form a metal-chloride complex. This process also produces hydrogen gas, which can be collected for use as fuel. Potassium hexachlororhodate(III) is an acidic compound with a high yield and can be used in anion exchange reactions, such as the removal of nitrate from water. It also forms complexes with organic molecules, which may lead to new catalytic architectures.
