Description :
2-(4-Pyridyl)-2-propanol is a molecule that consists of a pyridine ring bonded to a propanone group. This molecule has been shown to react with water under mechanistically controlled conditions, forming an organometallic intermediate that can undergo cross-coupling reactions in the presence of chloride and radiation. The mechanism for this reaction is based on a functional theory, which states that the electrophilic oxygen atom from the water molecule reacts with the 2-pyridyl group to form an alkyl radical. This alkyl radical then reacts with chloride and yields an organometallic intermediate. The photoexcited 4-cyanopyridine can react with this intermediate, forming a substituted pyridine product.
