1-(Piperidin-4-yl)ethanone hydrochloride is a lipid-lowering agent that belongs to the class of drugs known as fibrates. It is used in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia, which is characterized by elevated levels of triglycerides in the blood. 1-(Piperidin-4-yl)ethanone hydrochloride lowers serum triglyceride levels by promoting lipoprotein lipase activity and inhibiting hepatic synthesis of VLDL and LDL cholesterol. This drug also has been shown to increase postprandial plasma ornithine concentrations and may be useful for patients with precaval syndrome (a disease involving nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea). 1-(Piperidin-4-yl)ethanone hydrochloride has no effect on glycine or linoleic acid levels in the body.
