Phthalazine is a coumarin derivative that is an antimicrobial agent. Phthalazine has been shown to have biological properties such as inhibition of the growth of bacteria in a reaction solution, and it is also used to treat malaria and other diseases. The pharmacokinetic properties of phthalazine are similar to those of chloroquine, with absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, rapid distribution in the body and metabolism by cytochrome P450 enzymes. It has been shown to react with light at 654 nm, releasing energy at 677 nm. This reaction can be monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The kinase selectivity profile for phthalazine shows that it inhibits protein kinases A and C but not protein kinase B or D.
